Help get funding for WMAs!

As of April 7, 2017, Assembly Member Jim Wood (District 2, North Coast) and seven co-sponsors have submitted a letter to the Budget Committee requesting $2.0 million in next year's budget for the state's Weed Management Areas (WMAs). To convey the importance of this investment in protecting California's natural infrastructure, we need to show how many organizations and individuals across the state care about controlling invasive plants. Here's what you do:

1. From your organization:

  • Use our template letter to prepare an official letter on your organization's letterhead.
  • The letter will be addressed to the budget committees, but you should also cc the representatives* that represent the area where your organization works.
  • Email your letter to Sean.MacNeil@asm.ca.gov, Susan.Chan@asm.ca.gov, Heather.Resetarits@sen.ca.gov, and Joe.Stephenshaw@sen.ca.gov (these are staffers who work with the relevant budget subcommittees -- they can all be on a single email). Please cc Paul.Ramey@asm.ca.gov in Assembly Member Wood's office, and Doug Johnson at Cal-IPC (dwjohnson@cal-ipc.org).
  • Send the letter to the other representatives cced in the letter. Their postal addresses and fax numbers are available on their websites. To send by email, you will need to call their Sacramento office and ask for the best person to send it to.

2. As an individual:

  • It is simple and powerful to weigh in as an individual. Go to the "contact" section of the website for your state representatives* (the ones who represent you as a voter) and submit an email expressing your concern about the impact of invasive plants and your hope that they will support the budget request letter for county Weed Management Areas.

*how to determine who your representatives are:

Contact Doug Johnson with any questions.

Thank you for supporting WMAs!
