Common names: Mediterranean sage; African sage

Salvia aethiopis (Mediterranean sage) is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb (family Lamiaceae) with very woolly leaves. It is native to Eurasia and has been known in northern California since the late 1800’s, where it was likely introduced as an alfalfa contaminant.  Like other mints, this plant has square stems and leaves arranged opposite and alternate along stems. Flowers are white and share similar form to other mints. Seeds are dispersed easily by parent plants that breakoff at their base and acting as tumble weeds.  Mediterranean sage has invaded rangeland in northern California, including disturbed shrub steppe and some grassland, where it can outcompete native vegetation. Plants are considered unpalatable by most grazing animals.
